Sherlock Holmes and HH Holmes
Mudgett worshiped him so much, his favorite alias soon became H.H. Holmes, taken precisely because of the famous literary character. Herman Mudgett was particularly fascinated with the game of chess Sherlock played with the diabolical criminals featured in all Doyle’s books, and his ‘inside’ knowledge of the forensics and techniques law enforcement was using at the time. H.H. Holmes was a student of investigatory technique, and for obvious reasons. This is why I constantly remind present day profiles and M.O. experts to be wary of including Herman Mudgett as just another evil to be identified, or cancelled from a list of suspects, using these standard criminal investigatory techniques. The killer was way out in front.
