Dead “Rich” Man Walking

While H.H. Holmes was in his prison cell awaiting execution, he was paid $7500 in cash by Hearst Newspapers for admitting he had murdered 27 innocent victims, as subject for one of the many articles Hearst ran on the killer. We all now know this number of victims was ridiculously low.
In today’s money, this would have amounted too approximately $30,000-$50,000. Imagine the power one of today’s inmates would yield with this much cash at his disposal while in prison. Unimaginable! Even more incredulous then how H.H. Holmes came to be in possession of this cash, is what he used the money for. Chapter 25 of Bloodstains spells out how the evil genius spent each dollar- to escape.
